“Can you imagine: I’m sitting in a cozy cafeteria on the shore of Danube and looking through some old photographs… We should make a ballet using Strauss’ music, which would contain as little of depression as possible, and a lot of irony and glamour” – such was the note sent to choreographer Andrej Melanjin by designer Vyacheslav Okunev. And voilà, ballet The Blue Danube created by these two artists that are well-known to the Lithuanian public, is already on the stage in Vilnius. The new edition of the libretto allows us to visit the end of the 19th century, the time of fascinating discoveries, while the scintillating music by Johann Strauss and a lovely storyline filled with love intrigues (with a few biographical motives from the life of the King of Waltz) reminds us of a wonderful fairy tale.
