“I’ve put my entire soul into La bohème. I fell in love with it immensely. There are no words to describe how strongly I’ve fallen in love with the characters that were created”, – wrote Giacomo Puccini in his letter after the premiere in 1896. The audiences couldn’t stay indifferent to this opera as well: after the performances in Italy the theatregoers wouldn’t allow the performers to walk off the stage up until midnight. Over three years La bohème triumphed not only in Europe, but also in Africa, North and South America, Turkey. Today it is one of the most popular and most often produced masterpieces.

Sergei Prokofiev’s music composed for the ballet is considered to be one of his best works, and his Cinderella has been produced many times in various theatres. On our stage the version of this beautiful fairytale is presented by the pupils from the Ballet Department of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts.

All for getting more deerskin clothes. All of them - if possible. George's madness reaches its peak.

“This film is the world’s most famous comedian‘s tribute to acrobatics and pantomime for it having inspired the greatest roles of his career. To quote the film theorist Bél Balázs, the flat feet of Chaplin’s character seem to belong to a slick acrobat with a bittersweet smile that wins us over and genius wisdom behind humble naiveté.” (Gediminas Kukta)

Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Tramp’ is accused of pickpocketing and hiding in a traveling circus to avoid the police. But as they say, when you flee from a wolf, you run into a bear. The poor man is exploited by the circus owner and, unknowingly, becomes an entertainer. And he dreams of the owner’s stepdaughter. The only obstacle – she falls in love with another. He must win the girl’s heart with a bold stunt. The last Chaplin’s film created in the end of the silent era, and the first to bring him an Oscar.

Sergei Prokofiev created ballet Romeo and Juliet in 1935-1936 – at that time he regretted his return from West to Russia and tried to get back, however, the Iron Curtain prevented him from doing so. The new impressive ballet was shunned by Russian theatres and saw daylight only in 1938 in Brno, Czechoslovakia. In Lithuania its premiere was unveiled in 1977. The production created in 1993 by Vladimir Vasiliev turned into a staple of Lithuanian ballet. The new interpretation of the eternal love story was offered by LNOBT's artistic director of ballet Krzysztof Pastor.

“Little onion Cipollino was the son of onion Cipollone. He had seven brothers: Cipoletto, Cipolotto, Chipolocho, Cipolucho and so on; all of the names were very suitable for this respectable family of onions” – this is how Gianni Rodari’s book The Adventures of Cipollino begins. The story brought worldwide fame to this winner of Hans Christian Andersen’s medal, and composer Karen Khachaturian set Cipollino to music. The brave Cipollino backed up by his little friends – the jolly Radish-Girl, the wise Cherry-Boy, and the beautiful Magnolia – defeats the evil Prince Citron and the cunning Signor Tomato. Together they experience many adventures, and the story ends very happily!

Along with Gounod’s Faust and Bizet’s Carmen, Jules Massenet’s Manon is one of the most famous and beloved French operas. At the LNOBT the premiere of Manon was presented on 18 September, 2015. The production immediately attracted everyone’s attention and was greeted with very positive reviews from both the audience and the critics. The main criterion for choosing creative team for Manon was its relation to the French operatic tradition. Thus, on the stage one can see the authentic chatter from the streets of Paris and the spellbinding charm of La Belle Époque.

“Ballet is also a symphony”, – claimed P. Tchaikovsky, who brought this genre closer to opera and symphony. In the beginning, however, such new point of view caused problems during the first production in Moscow: the performers, choreographer and even conductor thought that the material was completely unsuitable for dancing! "Swan Lake" was saved by choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov – the production presented in 1895 in Saint Petersburg was a triumph and remains up until today as one of the most popular examples of a classical romantic Russian ballet. Hardly a ballet company exists whose repertoire does not include a production of "Swan Lake". Rarely does a ballerina not dream of dancing the stunning swan Odette / Odile.

Never before have I felt such responsibility and been so uplifted while producing a theatre performance: after all, the love story of Barbora and Žygimantas Augustas is genuine, sorrowful and controversial. No one knows the exact turns within the story and different chronicles contain only bits and pieces, thus I was enjoying a certain freedom of creativity. The whole action is transposed into an abstract scenery, the characters are wearing stylized costumes of the epoch. I am creating live theatrical action through gentle idealization of the love story, slightly personalized interpretation of facts and my own feminine intuition. I’m not really interested in finding a modern form of the production – the main concern is the action itself, where fates of people are closely intertwined. (Choreographer Anželika Cholina)

“The first thing to say about English National Opera's new Puccini production is that it is stunningly pretty. The second thing to say is that, well, it is stunningly pretty. And the third thing… Forget the opera – admire the stage pictures. This Butterfly is so visually entrancing it doesn't matter what the story is about or whether it touches the heart. From the first note to last, the eyes have it”, – wrote Financial Times after the premiere in London. The director of this production Anthony Minghella was a laureate of eight Academy Awards, known to the world as a famous director and screenwriter of The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Cold Mountain. The production of Madam Butterfly at the English National Opera marked director’s debut in the field of opera and proved to be highly successful. It won the prestigious Lawrence Olivier prize as the best opera premiere of 2005 and was presented in Vilnius after six months, on 23 March, 2006 – it was soon named one of the best opera productions of all times to be shown at the LNOBT. Speaking of the differences between productions in London and Vilnius, the director himself claimed the latter was deeper, more subtle, revealing more meaning and poetry.

And yet, the most beautiful image was created by the hundreds of little candles, beaming through the darkness of the branches…” This is how The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written by the German romantic writer Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, begins. It inspired Piotr Tchaikovsky to create an incredibly beautiful music for ballet that manages to charm both children and their parents. Even today, around Christmas time a real The Nutcracker fever is always shaking up theatres all over the world!

While Strauss was still alive, Die Fledermaus made its way into the repertoires of 200 different theatres and even today it is the most often produced operetta in the world. What were the reasons behind the popularity of this most Viennese operetta? Mistaken identities, flirtatious moments at the ball, elegant lightness of being and charming confusion, as well as spellbinding melodies – even the most sophisticated appreciators of opera claim that Die Fledermaus is indeed a perfect work of art!

Don Quixote is one of the favourites of the audience, and not only at the LNOBT. Of course, it probably wouldn’t be very wise to seek the wisdom and profound images created by M. de Cervantes in this ballet, however, the work is not striving to be too serious anyway. Rich, scintillating choreography and melodious, temperamental music filled with Spanish motives is a wonderful entertainment that always brings many merry moments to its viewers. It is a ballet that reminds us of fireworks.
