Composer Franz Liszt described Gioacchino Rossini as “sparkling, honest, capricious, lazy, ironic, brilliant mind” – indeed, this Italian composer was a genius of his epoch, the joy of life and opera buffa. His working style was unusually fast: in 19 years he wrote 38 operas, and it took him only around 3 weeks to complete Il barbiere di Siviglia. Rossini’s colleague Gaetano Donizetti, who was known for working even faster, ironically remarked: “no wonder; after all, he is so lazy!” According to the statistics of Operabase, Il barbiere di Siviglia is the 9th most often produced opera in the world. On LNOBT’s stage this wonderful comedy was brought to life by director Emilio Sagi, known to our audience from the elegant Le nozze di Figaro.
